"Everything in the world, begins and ends with stories"
On this channel I publish video essays exploring philosophy, the pursuit of meaning, culture and more in movies and television. I think stories can help us shape ourselves, become better beings and find meaning in life.
I developed my passion for cinema during my mid teens and since than have completed my Bachelors in film studies at the University of Amsterdam, my masters in American History and created this UA-cam channel. I've also worked as a UA-cam consultant at the UA-cam agency Team5pm in Amsterdam.

Making money from creativity is not always easy. So much so that there is a famous archetype of 'the starving artist'. In this video I explore where this archetype comes from and how creatives can become better at marketing, sales, money and finances. Through the story of van Gogh and the movie At Eternity's Gate.

Were those real dead guys at the end? Damn.

This is probably the best video essay/analysis ever made. It assumes you are familiar with the topic in hand so it doesn’t have to spend 30 minutes up to two hours explaining every single detail, only for the last 10 minutes of the video actually providing reasoning and evidence for the statement proposed, with the last two minutes is just shilling out Patreon and social medias. Another thing that makes this analysis great compared to others is that the hook directly relates to the topic and statement proposed. Not half assed, not barely, fucking directly.
2:37 I think that this especially changed with the phasing out from sword and shield combat to firearms, because of course in medieval warfare and prior you could be killed by a mere stroke of bad luck but generally if you were good at swordplay and combat you had a better chance. In modern warfare with guns, bombs, and cannons, one bad step could blow your leg off and being in the wrong place at the wrong time could get you blown to bits
I remember watching the end of all quiet on the western front and remembering how saddened and enraged I was seeing the protagonist getting shot literally minutes before the end of ww1 not many war movies have impacted me in that a way. I literally felt empty and soulless after watching it for a while. At first I thought it was a bad movie. but the more I thought about it, it really made me think of this is how they felt on the front lines all the time.😢
An anti-war written work that presents the WW2 as the inverse of heroism is the Sven Hassel series, because the respective characters try to survive not only the war but also the fascist regime they have to serve under and as the war progresses more and more of said characters luck runs out as one by one they die meaningless deaths in a meaningless war, and main character only manages to survive by managing to convince an US officer to take him as a PoW.
I generally avoid watching YT mini-docs but this one was pretty good 👍
bruh I saw apocalypse now and couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks
A very good anti war film for me was the “ Kings Man” movie. Purely because I was too invested in the main character and seeing what would become of that guy
such beautifully crafted video essay enjoyed more than the movie
Aren’t these so called “city Mayans” called Aztec? The Mayans moved out of their towns long before the time of european contact.
All Quiet On The Western Front is a great example of a war movie that manages to be anti-war with its themes, but I personally think the greatest anti-war movie ever created is Come and See. No other movie manages to capture the inconcievable dread of war the same way it does. Still, amazing video, I absolutely agree with you. Most anti-war movies aren't anti-war. Rather, they glorify the war and show the meaningless deaths of countless people every second as heroic. Another phenomenal example of an anti-war film is the Father of a Soldier, a Soviet-Georgian movie about a common farmer who's accidentally sucked into the frontlines, where he witnesses death and misery, and slowly becomes a strong soldier himself. It both shows the mental strength greatness and greatness of the individuals in the war, but also the meaningless and avoidable deaths it caused. [SPOILERS] The movie ends as the titular character finds his son by a total accident and warmly reunites with him, only the latter to be killed by a random opened fire from the German side amidst a ceasefire. Tragic for sure, but that's simply the nature of war.
You are doing great job. I think we should discourage the war. In the war there are no winners. Even one party win without any damage to them, they also losers because they have destroyed properties and human lives in other party. That make them losers as human.
Everyone suffers and dies, no matter how talented, rich, good, or bad (read Ecclesiastes). The secret is to be as good as we can, trust God), and enjoy the journey, whether it is long or short. It's not enough to be a rock, an island, or some sort of post-modern stoic. Humans are not built that way; but be like water.
I think ant-war film would have to follow the losers than the victors becuase of how hard it's to show the feeling of "you won but at what cost". But if you follow the losers of a war, you would see nothing but dispair and showing war is ultimately a bad thing.
i love all quiet on the western front!! i watched the movie and read the book in 8th grade
As someone who really enjoys COD, yeah war really sucks but unfortunately a lot of youths seem attracted to the idea of it through media for whatever reason.
Feelings mean Nothing ! Don't be a **say Pull your pants up LETS GO !😤✊
Here is the bottom line: Dont break your fucking back for a job or a career. If you're literally forced to work in order to not be out on the streets, then im going to be doing the absolute minimum to achieve that. I don't owe a "job" anything besides showing up on time and carrying out my base duties. Im not going "above and beyond" or trying to be fucking Superman for some dude who wouldn't care if i was drowning. Im only here for pay, health insurance, and some form of retirement. My real life is OUTSIDE of work. Who i am is not what i do for fiat currency.
Bit of a shit video when you didn't even include Gangs of London, which Gareth Evans created and worked on a lot of the first season.
this was the worst movie i ever watched. TBVH many potholes, many unfinished plots, many illogical scenes. I cant believe the 8.2 rating and people leaving comments like *i loved it etc etc* I HATED IT. absolutely time waste
Money. I need to make a point with money.
I'm that kind of friend that doesn't looks sad at all and smiles all the time
your history teacher failed you if you’re proud of your country and applaud war.
This is a nice take on the "movie character" but the real Frank Abagnale had very little similarity to the movie. Read Wikipedia to learn the truth. While Frank Abagnale was supposedly impersonating all of those people, he was in prisons for real petty crimes against real victims.
I did 20 years in the New York City Fire Department. I never once had the feeling of boredom or futility. If I ever felt sorry for myself I’d look at those who needed us at the worse time in their life and realize I had purpose. Want a life! Get a reason to live.
No, never felt that. Everyone gives a bleep. Religion, the fact that you need the girlfriend and the rest of the worlds demands that can kill you if not catered to. Just saying there is no way to not give a bleep
There's anti war film "grave of fireflies"
Peter Gibbons gets high anxiety of worrying about losing his job, and Mr. Bill Lumbergh yelling at him.
Peter Gibbons is at his office, staring at his desk instead of updating software feeling nervous, angry and embarrassed.
Peter Gibbons going to work getting stuck on bumper to bumper traffic is making him most irritable.
I know that Initech the office building work makes him nervous, angry and embarrassed.
I think a truly anti war film would be from the pov of the innocent civilians that suffer at the hands of of every soldier who comes onto their land I’m sick of hearing abt from the pov of rapists and war criminals. These movies are all polished if they don’t show the truth which is war turns (or gives them the opportunity to show their true colors however u want to say it) men who you think are normal into rapists and pillagers of people who want absolutely nothing to do with them.
In “A testament of youth”, a young woman has four men in her life who go to war. None come back. They just die one by one and then the movie is over.
Stoicism; The effective and efficient implementation of indifference.

Loudermilk when he had a job .👏
The scariest thing that i realized, reading about WW1 is that it was inevitable.
Tommy is just a man who does things that people all want to do but do not have the courage to. He does things with no fear. Why? Because he has learned the world and how people work. Yes Tommy has done things that an ordinary person aren’t able to do, but who else would give him the things he got. No one ever. Now, are we a mortal human ? Yes. But why are there human beings walking around the world with power over the whole human race, but once an ordinary guy that understands both the poor, and hard working people, that then rises up without any power or past family power, he’s looked as evil. He did things that we all want to do but of course it’s evil, but he wanted to love like we all do, freedom from the world , the powerful people. Yes it’s an evil world to be free sadly, but he did this and i understand his character. Fuxk.
"Happiness is the seed of unhappiness" (Buddhist quote). Once you start to let go of your attachment to desire, pleasure and comfort, only then can you really begin to reveal the true happiness that lies within. Notice I say reveal and not find. Happiness can never be found, out there, in the pursuit of desire, pleasure and comfort. Why? Because you have never lost it. You've only concealed it. Inner peace and happiness, or more accurately, contentment can only ever be revealed.
GOOD STUFF MAN HAVE SUBD
I just want to say thank you for being "that one guy" who actually lists material used because sometimes I've spent hours on that, you're great man
imagine be a German soldier(the soldier from ALL quiet on front) and listen that you Will fight again at the HELL again, until 11 am.
If you've ever had a job you hated sitting in a cubicle this movie is like Valhalla
Don't seek happiness, seek something worth suffering for 🤯
excellent work on this
This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, a perfectly orchestrated build up of anxiety. Everyone did a phenomenal job in this.
all quiet is the first war film i have watched where it made me feel so uneasy i had to take a 10 min break, it was just horrific my brain needed a time out.
“Come and see” 1985 is by far the best anti war film I’ve seen. It does everything all quiet on the western front does but better and more graphic. It’s one of those movies that I saw years ago and still randomly think of to this day. If you like war movies it’s a must watch.
